A-Team slate to host ‘meet the candidates’ event
Separate campaign kickoff party also scheduled
Asbury Park City Council candidates from the A-Team — Zero Tolerance ticket will host a “meet the candidates” event at the West Side Community Center on Thursday, Oct. 9, from 7 to 10 p.m., according to the group’s Facebook page.
Members of the Asbury Park community are invited to come out and meet the A-Team candidates running in the Nov. 4 city council and board of education elections.
Running for Asbury Park City Council are Remond Palmer, Derrick Grant, Duanne “King” Small, Rosetta Johnson and current Asbury Park Board of Education member Kenneth Saunders, Jr.
Voters last year approved a change of government referendum, which requires a new governing body to be elected this November and sworn in on January 1. Current council was sworn in July 1.
All five council seats are up for grabs in the November 4 election and it will be the first time in the city’s history voters will directly select their mayor.
One candidate must secure more than 50 percent of the popular vote to be elected mayor. If no candidate gets over 50 percent of the vote on election day, the top two candidates will go head-to-head in a run-off election four weeks later.
Palmer is the ticket’s mayoral candidate. Grant, Small, Johnson and Saunders seek election as members of City Council.
Running for three full-term Board of Education seats are Stephen “Steve” Williams, Arva Council and incumbent Felicia Simmons. The three will also attend the meet the candidates event.
The A-Team — Zero Tolerance city council candidates will square off against members of the Asbury Together slate in the upcoming November election. Incumbent council members John B. Moor and Amy Quinn, and Joe Woerner, Barbara “Yvonne” Clayton, and Jessie “Coach K” Kendle. Moor is the Asbury Together ticket’s mayoral candidate.
Incumbent Mayor Myra Campbell seeks re-election and city resident Harold Suggs has filed to run for mayor independently.
The West Side Community Center is located at 115 Dewitt Ave.
On Friday, Oct. 10, the A-Team Zero Tolerance ticket will host a campaign kickoff party at Bradley Beach Bowl & Recreation Center.
The free event takes place from 9 p.m. to midnight. Music will be provided by DJ Reem.
Bradley Bowl is located at 1217 Main St. in Bradley Beach.
