Abandoned boat washed ashore in city still unclaimed
'Nothing suspicious has been revealed surrounding the matter'
No owners have come forth to recover a boat that ran aground on Asbury Park’s First Avenue beach Christmas Eve, Asbury Park Police confirmed Monday.
The empty vessel, approximately 22-24 feet long and named “Braveheart,” was found Wednesday morning and towed by the city’s public works department to the North Asbury beachfront near the Loch Arbour border.
No engine was attached to the boat, according to Acting Chief Anthony Salerno. Police ran the serial numbers in their system to find the vessel registered to an address in Rockaway Beach, N.Y., and has not been reported as stolen.
“Nothing suspicious has been revealed surrounding the matter,”said Salerno.
Asbury Park police contacted Rockaway Beach police to have them locate and notify the owners of the boat, but as of Monday no owners have come forward, he said.
The National Coast Guard and State police were notified of the incident, and both stated they were not investigating the matter, Salerno said.
Members of the Coast Guard informed Salerno the vessel was drifting at sea for “a long while,” he said.
Due to its status as found property, Salerno believes the city is required to store the boat for at least six months if no owners claim it.
