Ani’s Lie To Me opens Saturday at Collective Art Tank
Mixed media show based on 2016 NYC street photography
Lie to Me is the new exhibit opening Saturday at the Collective Art Tank on Bangs Avenue.
Presented by artist Kamelia Ani [at right], the show features street photography altered by an array of mixed media, like paint, broken glass, and, as she says – of course, the lie.
“I first thought of the idea when I found myself lying, telling people I was ‘fine’ when I really wasn’t,” Ani, 30, said in a written statement. “We have a tendency to mask [our] true selves in the personas we create for the outside world. I noticed it in a lot of my photography. I felt that there were stories hidden behind the lies of what my unknowing subjects were trying to present to the world.”
The result is Ani’s first foray in the world of mixed media. In revisiting photos taken in in the spring of 2016 through the streets of New York City, Ani assigned a lie to each one, including her own -“I’m fine” through the creation of collages.
This is Ani’s second art show at the Collective Art Tank, which debuted her ongoing Humans of Asbury Park project last spring.
“I am thankful to have access to a cooperative art space that gives local artist like myself opportunities we might not have otherwise,” Ani said in a written statement. “I am also grateful to John Viggiano for believing in my process and encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone. I wouldn’t be doing any of this if it weren’t for him. Also, I want to thank Jenn Hampton of Parlor Gallery, who has been a mentor and helped guide me through this process.”

An opening reception will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday and an artist talk forum will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, both at The Collective Art Tank, located 529 Bangs Ave.
