AP Chamber organizes Cabernet for Canines
Fundraiser to help with care of 276 dogs rescued from Howell home
The Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce has organized Cabernet for Canines, a fundraiser for the 276 dogs rescued from a Howell home on June 3.
The Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals [MCSPCA] was called in by the local Animal Control after complaints of a stray dog running around the neighborhood sparked concern about the number of dogs inside a Bennett Road home, according to written statement from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
Residents Charlene and Joseph Handrik were are charged with 276 counts of animal cruelty for inflicting unnecessary cruelty upon a living animal or creature by providing inhumane living conditions and an additional 276 counts of animal cruelty for failing to provide proper and necessary veterinary care to their dogs.
“This decision was due in large part to the miraculous fact that despite living in deplorable conditions and not receiving proper veterinary care, the dogs seized from the residence were in relatively good physical health,” said Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.
In a written statement, Chamber Executive director Jackie Pappas said the MCSPCA needs help in order to administer vaccinations, microchips, spay/neuter surgeries, food, shelter and general compassionate care to the dogs they are currently housing.
The Cabernet for Canines event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the VFW Harold Daley Post No. 1333, located at 701 Lake Avenue. The fundraiser will include all-inclusive beer, wine, and small bites fare, music, and a screening of a special dog movie. Participants will be given a custom etched LOVE Asbury Park wine glass.
Officials said 50 percent of the proceeds will go directly to the MCSPCA Howell Dogs Fund. Tickets are $20 per person. To RSVP, click here to email or call 732-775-7676.
