Just two days before the annual Asbury Park High School vs Neptune Township Thanksgiving Day game, school official opted to cancel the highly attended football game.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, the traditional Thanksgiving Day football game between Asbury Park High School and Neptune Township High School is being postponed until a mutually agreeable date,” an Asbury Park school district spokesperson said in a written statement. “On behalf of the Asbury Park and Neptune Township School Districts, be assured that the safety of our students, staff and communities remains paramount. We extend to you a Happy Thanksgiving.”

Asbury Park Police Department spokesman Sgt. Michael Casey said the decision to cancel the game was made by school officials.

“The head of their security provided information that an unconfirmed threat of violence would take place,” Casey said. “There is an ongoing investigation as to the threat’s credibility by the police department.”

The annual game is a long tradition, with the two communities rivaling for bragging rights. This year the game was to be held in Asbury Park. It is so well attended that the police department had planned to close surrounding roadways.

Asbury Park School District spokeswoman Chanta Jackson said the game will be rescheduled.
