APHS Students Headed To Marlboro Coding Camp
Jersey Shore Women in Tech Raise Funds To Support Four Students
Jersey Shore Women in Tech [JSWT], a fast-growing organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and mentoring women in the tech industry has raised enough funds to send four Asbury Park High School students to Plum Crazy Robotics tech coding camp in Marlboro.
“We have been humbled by how the local community has rallied around this cause and been as passionate as we are about providing fair and necessary educational opportunities for all children – regardless of economic status, gender, or race,” JSWT Co-Founder Brittany Jacobs said. “[We are] extremely proud to be able to empower girls to explore the world of technology in such a fun way!”
The funds were raised through a Go Fund Me campaign that ran from Nov 18 to Dec 31, a partnership with Geek Speak, a holiday mixer held in conjunction with SEMGeeks, and an anonymous $360 donation, the $5K goal was met.
The weekly, two-month-long Plum Crazy Robotics camp features an interactive lab where students will learn code, writing in Python and various other languages while working with Arduinos, Raspberry Pi’s, gaming, 3D printing, to name a few. The 90-minute classes will be held after school, with each student choosing which trajectory most interests them. Each student will receive a take-home kit and transportation will be arranged at no cost to the student as part of the sponsorship.
The winning applicants are Jaione’ Murray, Juna Weedon, Micah Wright, and Eliyah Tulley. JSWT organizer said APHS Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction Janice Michaud Kroposky played a critical role in helping to facilitate the application process. The students selected provided inspiring submissions detailing their desire to code and providing support for why they were the right candidate.
“We are delighted that local organizations like JSWT share in Asbury Park School District’s core beliefs; one of which includes increasing opportunities and exposures for our students,” District Superintendent Sancha Gray said. “Providing our students with this experience opens up a world of possibilities while deepening their knowledge of coding, which is a necessary literacy in the digital age.”
JSWT will present the award recipients with the scholarship during the 7 pm Thursday Asbury Park Board of Education meeting at Bradley Elementary School.
