APMFF Announces An Evening with Danny DeVito
DeVito: Asbury Park has been an important part of my life
The comedic actor whose breakout role in Taxi led to long career in front of and behind the scenes of a host of television, film and stage productions will return to Asbury Park in April.
An Evening With Danny DeVito will be held 7 p.m. April 28 at the historic Paramount Theatre, Asbury Park Music & Film Festival organizers have announced.
“I’m honored to be part of this year’s Asbury Park Music & Film Festival, and look forward to coming home,” DeVito said in a written statement. “Asbury Park has been an important part of my life, and this will be a great night at the Paramount Theatre.”
Born in Neptune, DeVito was raised in Asbury Park. Like Springsteen, he’s been known for his impromptu visits, most recently a 2016 tour along the boardwalk with Mayor John Moor and Freeholder Tom Arnone [shown in photos].
The Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner is known for his roles in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Terms of Endearment, Romancing The Stone, Twins, Ruthless People, and Tin Men. He directed and acted in The War of the Roses, Death to Smoochy, Throw Momma from the Train, Curmudgeons, Duplex, The Ratings Game, and The World’s Greatest Lover. He produced, directed and acted for Matilda, Hoffa and Curmudgeons.
A principal of Jersey Film’s 2nd Avenue, successor company of Jersey Films, DeVito produced Erin Brockovich, Pulp Fiction, Out of Sight, Freedom Writers, Garden State, Along Came Polly, and Living Out Loud. He served as a producer and co-starred in Get Shorty, Man on the Moon, Be Cool, Even Money, and Drowning Mona.
DeVito received a Tony nomination for his 2017 Broadway debut in Arthur Miller’s The Price; and has won a Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award and Broadway.com Audience Choice Award for the role. In 2012 he received rave reviews in the London West End revival of Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys, which he reprised in 2013 in Los Angeles.
His long running It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is in its 13th season.
Billed as an intimate evening with the Hollywood star, the event will feature select video vignettes and stories from DeVito’s relationship with Asbury Park and his illustrious career, integrated with discussion, a Q&A session and other special presentations, organizers said.
In related news, Sublime with Rome will headline APMFF’s musical lineup at 9:30 p.m. April 28 at Convention Hall.
“We can’t wait to come play the Asbury Park Music & Film Festival,” said Wilson. “So many great bands have played at Convention Hall over the years and we are ready to add our name to the list. We hope the fans are ready too.”
The California-based trio has released two studio albums, with 2015’s Sirens reaching Top 5 on both the U.S. Rock and Indie charts.
In addition, the APMFF lineup features performance from Built to Spill, North Mississippi All-Stars, Low Cut Connie, Tangiers Blues Band, Bobby Bandiera and Friends, and Patrick Davis and His Midnight Choir.
The APMFF films include the Long Strange Trip, with a post film panel discussion and Q&A with producers Eric Eisner and Justin Kreutzmann; and the world premiere of Break On Thru: A Celebration of Ray Manzarek and The Doors.
All proceeds from the festival go toward supporting the Asbury Park Music Foundation’s musical programs for children, including those with The Hope Academy Charter School, The Hip Hop Institute at the Boys and Girls Club, and the Asbury Park Summer Recreation Music Camp.
