APMS baseball team wins Bayshore League Championship
Cuccurullo: 'This is easily the best team I've ever managed'
The Asbury Park Middle School Baseball Team won the 2014 Bayshore Middle School Baseball League Championship yesterday with an 8 – 6 victory over Keansburg, according to a district news release.
The tough-fought game was one for the record books. Jamere Cancel [shown at right] led them team with two hits, two runs scored, one stolen base and two RBIs.
Nasir Jones hit two doubles, earned three stolen bases and hit one RBI. Shortstop Devin Nash made an over-the-back game-saving catch in the last inning, and Luis Rodriguez had two hits including the game-winning double that drove home two runs. Andre Spann pitched.
The team, coached by Robert Cuccurullo, finished the regular season with a record of 8-1-1, capturing the Bayshore Middle School Baseball League Division title. This team won the school its first Bayshore District title and championship in school history.
“This is a very special group of young men. They played hard every game and worked well together as a team,” Cuccurullo said in the release. “In my 20 plus years of coaching baseball, this is easily the best team I’ve ever managed.”

Season MVP: Nasir Jones
Defensive Player of the Year: Jamere Cancel
Most Improved Player: Kyrie Moore
Sportsmanship Award: Kavon Robinson
Playoff co- MVP’s: Jamere Cancel and Andre Spann [shown at left]
Other members of the team are: Jael Cordero, Garland Henley, Quameire Mohammed and Alexander Peavey. Cuccurullo was assisted by Lindsey Olsen.
