Art Park Planned in City’s Southwest Neighborhood
Community Input Meeting Being Held 6pm Jan 30 At The Senior Center
Constructing a new park with a focus on giving youth an opportunity to create art has landed on the discussion table in Asbury Park.
City Officials are inviting the community to weigh in on the creation of an Art Park 6 p.m. Jan 30 at the Asbury Park Senior Center, located at 1201 Springwood Avenue.
“We are really excited to start working on this project,” Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn. “There is a desire to start moving art across the entire city, not just along the waterfront and in the downtown, and where better than to put an art park in the southwest neighborhood.”
A part of the city’s Choice Neighborhoods Plan to revitalize the southwest neighborhood, the topics of discussion will include the park’s design, youth created art, and the Environmental Shade Tree Commission involvement.
The Art Park, to be located on city land between Atkins Avenue, Avenue A, and Borden Avenue, will be funded through the $500,000 Choice Neighborhoods grant awarded by Housing and Urban Development [HUD].
“The Art Park project is the third early implementation item of the HUD Choice planning grant,” the City’s Director of Planning and Redevelopment Michele Alonso said. “The goals of the project are not only to create a new pocket of green space on what were two empty lots, but to have local youth gain skills in creating art and to have residents learn more about the greening work of the Environmental Shade Tree Commission.”
