As school closures continue, city provides play time for local youth
Boys & Girls Club, recreation dept. band together
School’s out until further notice, but that doesn’t mean the city’s youngsters have to sit at home.
Due to last week’s Hurricane Sandy, school has been canceled since last Monday, when the storm hit. School is canceled tomorrow, as well, city manager Terence Reidy said today, but the district is shooting to re-open on Wednesday.
City organizations are banding together to provide recreation opportunities for area youth until school is back in session. The city recreation department and the Boys and Girls Club yesterday held an event on the Prospect Courts, on Prospect Avenue, Reidy said. The Boys and Girls Club brought volunteers and fed about 160 people with sandwiches, while children played basketball, jumped rope, Hula-Hooped, played flag football and played dodgeball, Reidy said.
They are holding a similar event right now, which started at 1 p.m. and will end at 4 p.m., Reidy said, at the Club headquarters on Monroe Avenue, which regained power yesterday.
Also, from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday this week, the boxing facility on Main Street above the Department of Public Works [DPW] building is open to the public. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an addult and all must sign a release form, Reidy said.
