Asbury Park Complete Streets’ Call To Action
Share Traffic Calming Ideas Via Email Or #slowthecars Via Social Media
Concerns about speeding along the city’s residential streets, particularly along Third and Fourth Avenues, is being met with a community call to action from the Asbury Park Complete Streets Coalition.
The grassroots organization is asking anyone with ideas on how to calm traffic to e-mail the group and/or share ideas on social media via #SlowTheCars.
Formed in 2015, the local group works to make every street in the 1.4 square mile community safe for all who use them, be it motorist, pedestrian, cyclists, skateboarders, etc. Their steering committee is comprised of Paula ‘Polli’ Schildge, Pam Lamberton, Doug McQueen, John Grant, Eric Galipo, Chris Lanni, Joe Grillo, Tracy Rogers, Rick Lambert, and Michael Kushner.
Honored by the State Department of Transportation in 2017, the group championed for a city-wide street design that takes all modes of travel into consideration; advocated for the city’s Main Street Road Diet; hosts educational events; sets up information tables at local events, festivals, walks, and runs; administers a bicycle rodeo with the school district; and conducts group rides throughout the city.
“There are such strong opinions about one solution or another,” the group said via written statement. “Have you seen anything that works? Are you intrigued by an idea you heard about? Do you have an original idea that you think might work? Let us know.”
Responses will be vetted and a task force will work in conjunction with a city representative.
