Asbury Park home featured on apartment therapy
local couple's use of design and functionality showcased
When aesthetics and functionality successful cross paths it becomes a design win.
This weekend, a 700-square-foot Asbury Park home on Cookman Avenue became the spotlight of an Apartmenttherapy.com feature for hitting the mark.
The online lifestyle and interior design DIY, shopping and advice site serves as a base to connect its audience to the resources they need.
The home is that of triCity’s own Creative Director and ad man Jason Thomson and his partner Sonia Jo, a bartender at Asbury Festhalle and Biergarten on Lake Avenue.
Together, the couple run Nomad, a travel inspired company that rents out vintage travel trailers and European style canvas tents for parties, weddings, and other special events. They also have a home décor and clothing line they sell at the Market at Fifth Avenue, a collective of local and national makers on the Asbury Park boardwalk.
The feature, entitled “Sonia and Jason’s Home Where Every Nook has its Purpose,” showcases the couple’s eye for turning refurbished materials into functionally aesthetic designs.
“Our style is a mix of flea market finds, items we’ve picked up while and new items we find along the way,” Thomson told the webzine. “The apartment we live in is on the small side so we needed to find ways to live big in a tiny package. We accomplished this by maximizing all the space without making it feel cramped. Every nook has its purpose.”
A partitioned bedroom was created by placing refurbished bookshelves salvaged from a neighboring used bookstore’s closing. A homemade platform bed and headboard, constructed from plywood serve as the back drop for the carousel painting Jason’ uncle crafted some 20 years ago.
“It depicts a time in the city when things were less than pleasant,” Thomson said.
Also not to be missed in the photos by Fiona Mullen, are the use of space in the couple’s kitchen, dining and living space.
“We love our home because it’s the perfect representation of who we are; cozy, warm, edgy, inviting,” Thomson said.
