Asbury Park Fishing Club Donates Flea Market Profits
City groups recieve $4,000 in support from oldest saltwater fishing club
Just days after the Asbury Park Fishing Club held its 24th Annual Fishing Flea Market at Convention Hall, organizers donated $4,000 to city organizations during the Wednesday night City Council meeting.
The oldest saltwater fishing club in the United States, the nonprofit group donated $1,500 to the Asbury Park Little League and Veterans of Foreign Wars Harold Daley Post #1333, $500 to the Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County and the Big Sister/Big Brothers of Monmouth, $250 to the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce and $200 to the Asbury Park Fireman’s Fund and the Asbury Park Toy Drive headed by Connie Breech.
“It’s just a great event and it’s not like this a $20 admission, it’s a $4 admission,” Mayor John Moor said. “With a $4 admission [fee] to give away $5,000 that means every penny goes back into the community.”
Aside from the checks presented to Danny McKee of the Asbury Park Little League, Asbury Park Fire Department Chief Kevin Keddy for the Fireman’s Fund, Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jackie Pappas, and VFW Commander Frank Brogna, some $1,000 in donations were made to area nonprofits outside of the city, Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn said.
McKee said the donation will be used to fund its Little League members’ trip to a summer camp in Pennsylvania, while Keddy and Brogna said the funds will most likely be redistributed back into supporting members of community who are most in need of support.
The Fishing Club will hold its 4th Annual Carp Contest from 6 a.m. to noon on April 17. The event, held in partnership with the Deal Lake Commission, invites members of the public to fish anywhere along the 158-acre man made water body to help control the invasive carp population.
Cash awards will be given for the top three carp catchers as well as for the under 12-year-old division. The weigh in will be held at Deal Lake flume before noon, according to organizers.
