Asbury Park grad to take the reins at high school
Reginald Mirthil, class of 1997, approved as principal
The board of education approved a new principal last night after weeks of debate over who would take the reins at the high school.
The new high school principal, Reginald Mirthil, holds a masters degree from Kean University. His appointment is effective from July 2, 2012, through June 30, 2013.
Mirthil is an alumnus of Asbury Park High School, having graduated in 1997. He currently holds the position of assistant principal at John Adams Middle School in Edison.
The board approved his salary at $119,564, according to the meeting agenda.
Mirthil is replacing Mark Gerbino, who held the position of principal for the last three years — a period of tremendous growth for the school. Gerbino gave a presentation to the board at the beginning of last night’s meeting detailing the high school’s progress in the past three years. With Gerbino at the helm, attendance went up, suspensions went down and the school met statewide adequate yearly progress [AYP] standards for the first time in years.
Gerbino will move to Thurgood Marshall Elementary School.
The board previously did not approve a different candidate, Charles Cunningham, for principal at the high school, overruling the superintendent’s recommendation. Cunningham’s salary would have been $124,728. For that story, click here.
