Asbury Park Man Sentenced to 17 Years For 2015 Fatal Stabbing
Judge Oxley: Williams must serve 85 Percent of Sentence Before Being Eligible For Parole
An Asbury Park man was sentenced Friday to 17 years for the 2015 stabbing death of Prize Johnson, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced.
Tyreek Williams, 24, of Asbury Park, pleaded guilty in December to the first degree aggravated manslaughter charge, in connection with the 2015 stabbing death of the 19-year-old Neptune resident.
Officials said Asbury Park police responded to a 9:58 p.m. Monday Jan. 5, 2015 report of a person being stabbed at a Ridge Avenue apartment complex. Johnson was found inside Building 1, Apartment 53 of the Washington Village apartments, located at 1259 Washington Avenue. He died on site from his injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:29 p.m.
A joint investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and the Asbury Park Police Department determined Williams encountered the victim on the 400 block of Ridge Avenue where an altercation ensued and culminated with Johnson being stabbed. With the assistance of friends, the victim made his way back to the Washington Village apartment, where he died, officials said.
Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Joseph W. Oxley attached a No Early Release Act [NERA] provision to the 17 year sentence, meaning Williams must serve 85 percent of the sentence before being eligible for parole. Once released, Williams will be placed on parole supervision for a period of five years.
The case was prosecuted by Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutors Christopher Decker and Katherine Butler.
