Asbury Park Museum Announces Community Events
Harris: Museum Aims To Educate & Advance An Understanding & Appreciation of the Diverse, Progressive, Resort & Urban Community’s History
The Asbury Park Museum has announced three programs in addition to its weekly African American Reads Ins being held Saturday afternoons through February’s end.
The brainchild of Asbury Galleria owner Kay Harris, the popup museum opened in December inside the fifth Avenue pavilion on the AP Boardwalk at 1200 Ocean Ave.
The Saturday afternoon community read-ins are a part of the 29th Annual African-American Read-In, a national celebration of African American Culture & Literature established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English.
The upcoming events include:
The 3 to 4 pm Feb. 16 Powerpoint Presentation and Book Signing by Asbury Park singer, songwriter, producer, and comedian Billy Terrell. Admission is free.
A 2 pm Feb 24 Book Signing and Talk with Tommy Petillo, lead singer of the doo-wop group The Duprees and President of the East Coast Music Hall of Fame. Admission is free.
And, the 6 to 9 pm March 1 museum fundraiser – A Tribute to Nat King Cole performed by Herb Glenn. Admission is $5, with a cash bar.
Harris said the museum’s mission is to “ re-introduce, educate and advance an understanding, and appreciation of the history of the diverse, progressive, resort and urban community of the City of Asbury Park, New Jersey, and neighboring towns. The museum strives to strengthen the bonds of the community and provide a venue for community-wide civic engagement, as well as pride and inclusion.”
The Asbury Park Museum is open noon to 6 pm Fridays and Sundays, and noon to 8 pm Sundays through March 10. For more information, visit their Facebook page.
