Asbury Park-Neptune Game Will Not Be Rescheduled
Repollet: I know players, alumni and fans are disappointed
The traditional Thanksgiving Day scrimmage between Asbury Park and Neptune will not be rescheduled, Asbury Park School District announced Wednesday afternoon.
“Despite many efforts to reschedule the Asbury Park-Neptune Thanksgiving Day football game, we were unable to reach a mutually agreeable date that would have allowed the game to be played,” District Superintendent Lamont Repollet said in a written statement. “As a result, Neptune has decided to forfeit.”
The announcement that the Thanksgiving Day would be cancelled game on Tuesday after the school district was alerted by the head of its security of a threat of violence, Asbury Park Police Department Spokesman Sgt. Michael Casey said.
Casey said the police department was investigating the credibility of the threat.
The game was scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the newly dedicated Butch Bruno Stadium in Asbury Park. The district had hoped to reschedule the match, which is said to date back some 90 years.
“Although I know players, alumni and fans are disappointed, be assured that we will work together with the Neptune Township School District to ensure the safety of all involved in the future and to allow this longstanding Shore tradition to continue,” Repollet said.
