Asbury Park Recreation Launches Fall Programs
Lineup includes community events, sports, dance, workout memberships, & mentoring programs
Sports, dance, workout memberships, and mentoring programs are being added to the Asbury Park Recreation fall community roster, city officials have announced.
“The goal of the City’s Recreation Committee is to create, and support, as many programs as possible to help benefit the children of Asbury Park,” said Councilman Jesse Kendle [at right], who is Chair of the Committee. “As a former coach, I know participating in these programs helps builds confidence and self-esteem, and creates community. We are very proud of the work we are doing and encourage all Asbury Park children to participate.”
The Recreation Department also continues to provide financial support for the City’s Youth Football Leagues to help offset expenses and to ensure all interseed youth are able to participate, Kendle said.
The Fall 2018 programs include:
Adult and child workout memberships are being offered at the Boxing and Fitness Facility, located on the second floor of the Department of Public Works facility at 9 Main Street. The facility features workout equipment, treadmills, free weights and a regulation size boxing ring. Open from 4 to 7 pm Monday to Friday, annual fees are $75.00 for ages 18 and under and $150.00 for adults. Children under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Asbury Park Technical Academy of Dance will provide scholarships for youth ages 3 to 17. Classes are set to begin later this month, with a location TBD.
Next month youth track, volleyball and tennis programs will launch for children ages 7 to 14. The 6-week introductory classes are $10 and sessions will run through November.
Through the Boys and Girls Mentoring Program high school students learn a variety of life skills, including CPR training, swimming, volunteering and job readiness. The free program meets weekly at the Asbury Park High School, located 1003 Sunset Ave. Girls will meet on Wednesdays and boys meet on Thursdays.
I Believe in Me Mentorship Program [shown in featured photo] empowers girls in grades 6 through 12 to use their voice, while building leadership skills and self-confidence. The free after-school program will start in October and culminates with an oratorical pageant in June.
Community Recreation Department events include:
The Annual Columbus Day Reenactment, slated for October 7 at the Fifth Avenue beach, weather permitting.
And, the Annual Trunk or Treat [shown above] event will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. October 31 in the City Hall parking lot, located at 1 Municipal Plaza. The event invites members from the business, nonprofit and larger community to provide Halloween treats for the city’s youth trick or treat. To host a trunk, or make a donation, contact Recreation Director Leesha Floyd at 732-502-5759 or leesha.floyd@cityofasburypark.com.
