Asbury Park School District Celebrates Its Rites Of Passage
Graduations, College Promise, Proms: Pre-K & Teen, Athletic & Educational Achievements Recognized
From an inaugural Pre-K Bridge Crossing and Bradley Elementary School Prom to Thursday night’s High School Graduation and Friday morning’s Martin Luther King Jr Middle School Promotion, the Asbury Park School District celebrated its traditional and new rites of passage this past month.
Newly sworn in Commissioner of Education [the district’s former superintendent] Dr. Lamont Repollet was the keynote speaker at Thursday night’s high school graduation, which is held annually at the historic Paramount Theatre on the AP Boardwalk.
The high school, which is celebrating an 83 percent graduation rate, also recognized its athletic and educational achievers, and its College Promise students – a program administered in conjunction with Brookdale Community College that funds students associate degrees.
The Martin Luther King Jr middle schoolers graduated Friday morning and an inaugural Pre-K graduation was held on June 13, two days before the Barack Obama Elementary School Prom. The high schoolers had their prom last month at Ariana’s Grand Woodbridge.
“On behalf of the Board of Education, my administration and the entire staff, we congratulate all of our graduates,” Superintendent Sancha Gray said. “Here in the Asbury Park School District, we have worked very hard to provide an environment with innovative programs that enable each student to succeed. We know it takes a village to raise a child. So, I personally want to thank our village for all you have done to move our students and district to the next level.
“Graduates, enjoy this moment,” she said. “It’s only the beginning of your bright future.”
