Several Asbury Park students were honored by the Asbury Park/Wall Elks Lodge No. 128 for their participation in the club’s Americanism contest.

District students with special needs between the ages of nine and 14, were asked to color a poster, write an essay or record their thoughts on why they are proud to be an American, according to a news release from the district.

The winners were: Philip Surles, Ny’Jaha McDowell, Sheldon Stephen and Jalen Asher. Their teacher is Robert Cuccurullo.

The students’ projects also will be on display at the New Jersey State Elks Convention and parade in Wildwood in June 2014, the release stated.
