Asbury sports legends gets NY Times obituary
Frank Budd was once known as the world's fastest human
A New York Times obituary today takes note of the death of Frank Budd, an Asbury Park High School graduate who was considered the world’s fastest human after he set a record in the 100-yard dash in 1961.
Budd, 74, died on Tuesday in Marlton, N.J.
In the obituary, the Times recapped Budd’s career, including his graduation from Asbury Park High School in 1958 where he was a standout in track, basketball and football. Budd graduated from Villanova with a decree in economics.
Two years out of Asbury Park High School, Budd competed in the 1960 Olympics. A year later as a senior at Villanova, he broke the world record in the 100-yard dash with a time of 9.2 seconds, the Times reported.
Budd also played in the National Football League and the Candian Football League, according to the Times. In later years, he worked for the Philadelphia parks system, an Atlantic City Casino and with the New Jersey Department of Corrections.
