In August, two young men from Asbury Park had a dream to create a talent show based on the popular ‘America’s Got Talent’ television show.
With the guidance of Diane Shelton, community outreach specialist for Interfaith Neighbors, and Monmouth University intern Leila Ali, Kevin Oakley and Kerry Simmons’ vision became a reality.
Throughout the fall and winter months, a team of volunteers, which included KYDS founder Mychal Mills and Asbury Park Alliance for a Healthier Asbury Park Director Nina Summerlin, came together to host auditions. Judging was done by a roster of community leaders.
“It’s inspirational,” said NJ Assemblywoman Joann Downey [D-11], one of Saturday’s judges. “I think it’s great to have this opportunity to display local talent here in Asbury Park to show we don’t only have beautiful beaches and boardwalks and restaurants but we also have very talented people.”
The end result was over 20 finalist vying for top honors in Springwood Avenue Park Saturday. The array of cross-generational talent included comedy, dance, rap, spoken word, hip hop, instrumental and ballad performances.
Judah Uter captured the 10 to 13 age group top honor; Promise Robinson won in the 14 to 18 category, Hezekiah Crockett in the 19 and over, and DaBelo the best group honor.
Summerlin, who in partnership with Asbury Park Transportation Manager Michael Manzella, is the lead behind the inaugural Asbury Park Alive event running 1 to 5 pm May 4. She said the Asbury Park’s Talent winners will be among the featured performers.
The free event closes Springwood Avenue at Atkins Avenue through to Lake Avenue to motor vehicle traffic in promotion of healthier living, with health screenings, fitness instruction, games, kid’s activities, art, and music provided along the route.
