Asbury’s ShowRoom Launches Art in Film Retrospective
Journey into the heart of the Renaissance runs through September
Sunday marks the opening of The ShowRoom’s seven film Art and Architecture in Cinema series, a retrospective spotlighting the historic greats of the Renaissance and the world and culture in which they lived.
Located in the midst of Asbury Park’s own downtown art district on Cookman Avenue, the movie house run a roster of critically acclaimed, independent, classic, foreign, family and festival-winning films.
With its Journey into the heart of the Renaissance series, the works of Da Vinci, Goya, Michelangelo, Renoir, Matisse and others are the backdrop for the cultural rebirth that lasted from the 14th century through to the midst of the 17th century.
The afternoon art in film series are held at 1:30 p.m. and kicks off with Sunday and Tuesday’s screening of “Florence And The Uffizi Gallery.” [Click on movie poster to right for preview]
The 2-D film is a multi-dimensional spotlight of the city and gallery that was home to Italian Renaissance artists Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Raphael, Da Vinci and Botticelli. The film includes the unveiling of Da Vinci’s ‘Adoration of the Magi, brought back to life after several years of restoration, and a look at the darker Gothic works by artists like Caravaggio.
• On April 17 and 19, “Goya – Visions of Flesh and Blood” features the portraiture artist many revere as the father of modern art.
• On May 15 and 17, “Leonardo Da Vinci – The Ultimate Exhibition,” retraces the scientific rigor and mind of the Mona Lisa artist.
• On June 12 and 14, “Renoir – Revered and Reviled,” looks at the Impressionist artist who turned away from the movement he helped manifest.
• On July 10 and 12, “Monet to Matisse – Painting the Modern Garden,” look at the influence horticulture played in the works of artists, including Van Gogh, Bonnard, and Pissarro.
• On August 14 and 16, “Teatro Alla Scala: The Temple of Wonders,” moves the series to a showcase of the theater that introduced ‘Nabucco,’ ‘Norma,’ and ‘Othello,’ and the cutting edge ‘Traviata.’
• On September 11 and 13, the series winds down with “The Papal Basilicas of Rome,” a feature that unites history, spirituality architecture and art.
