Backward Glances host of national hat design contest
Winners unvieled at Mad Hatter's Tea Party Grand Parade of Hats
Vintage retailer Backward Glances is calling on your creativity.
The Cookman Avenue store is among 40 retailers across the nation participating in Colossal Coachman’s contest.
The hat design event features an elope Inc. top hat [shown right] participants can decorate in their own funky manner. Entrants can pick up their hat the local store.
“We believe in having fun with our clothing all year round, whether it’s costumes for theme parties or unique vintage outfits to wear every day,” Backward Glances owner Cindy Ciullo said in a written statement. “We’re thrilled to be partnering with elope [Inc.] for this contest, and having the opportunity to show them the artistry and creativity available in the area.”
elope Inc., is a headwear manufacturer and distributer based in Colorado Springs, Co.
“We love costuming and creating original designs,” elope Inc. CEO Kevin Johnson said. “Our goal with this contest is to share that DIY and maker sensibility with our retailers. We want to inspire creative costume parties that are about fun and friends – and not just on Halloween!”
The designed chapeaux are due July 17th, with winners announced at the shop [inside the Shoppes at the Arcade, 658 Cookman Ave.] during the Grand Parade of Hats at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on July 19th. Iced tea and cake will be supplied; wear your best vintage tea party attire to qualify for prizes.
Hats will be judged on one’s use of the elope Inc. hat style, creativity, overall effect, and crowd appeal.
The local winner will be awarded a prize package from the stores of the Shoppes at the Arcade and will be eligible for the grand prize, which includes a $1000 prize package of elope Inc. hats and party-planning supplies as well AS $100.
The national grand prize winner will be announced August 19th.

Backward Glances is open noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The store is located at 658 Cookman Ave., Unit 20 in the lower level of the The Shoppes at the Arcade.
