Beachgoers break record in Asbury Park
Giberson: We had a nice jump this year - 32 percent increase in sales
The Fourth of July weekend along Asbury Park beaches proved to the best one yet, according to Beach Utility Manager Garrett Giberson Sr. Weekend and single day sales records were broken he said.
From Friday through Tuesday, what Giberson said marks the Fourth of July weekend, beach sales reached $266,740, a 32 percent increase over last year’s $192,666 sales during the same time frame.
“We had a nice jump this year,” Giberson said. “Memorial Day weekend did not hold up to the previous year so [now] we are doing nicely.”
Sunday proved to be the best day, with the highest single day sales total coming in at $102,887, with an estimated 20,000 plus visitors. That figure includes daily ticket sales, kids, and seasonal badge holders.
“As long as I can remember, this is as I can remember, and I’ve been here sice the 60s,” Giberson said.
Despite the catapult of those attending Asbury Park beaches, Giberson said there were no major issues, in terms of rescues.
“There were no real problems,” he said. “We had a few minor rescues and a few heat related problems but they were nothing serious.”
Giberson said a fleet of 18 to 20 lifeguards are on duty during the week and anywhere from 26 to 30 are posted during the weekends.
Police Captain Guy Thompson said an estimated 20, to 25,000 visited Asbury Park during the Tuesday night fireworks.
“This was probably one of the best years in terms of incidents on the boardwalk,” said Thompson, who frequently covers the waterfront area. “We had very minor incidents.”
