Boardwalk performers face $30 fee increase
Changes include moving 100 feet after 3 hours if asked
Boardwalk performers face a $30 annual fee increase should the City Council vote next Wednesday to approve changes to the guidelines that govern what is permitted along the waterfront.
Currently performers pay a $20 annual license fee.
The City Council also will vote to place a stipulation on the amount of hours a performer can be stationed at one location along the boardwalk.
If asked to move after 3 hours at one location, Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn said [at right], a performer must move at least 100 feet.
“As many of you know we talked about sharing the wealth of the street performers on the boardwalk and having them go around so you didn’t have the exact same thing in the exact same spot all day and competing against a business who is potentially paying a musician or a band to play,” Quinn said.
“So in the spirit of that, we have amended the street performer permit to require that if asked [after three hours] by a special or officer to move, you move 100 feet,” she said. “If you are not asked to move you don’t have to move.”
Plans to reduce performance hours to 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. have been scrapped and will remain at the permitted 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
“There’s a number of people who perform after 7 p.m. that feel this would be a real hardship to them,” Quinn said.
The City Council will vote on the changes May 27 during their regular session meeting. The public will have a chance to ask questions and make comments prior to the vote. The changes will go into effect 20 days after the final vote.
