Boardwalk redeveloper beach improvements approved
Public WiFi, clearer signage and new lifeguard station included
A new lifeguard station, public wireless internet access and clearer signage are all a part of a list of beach improvement items approved the City Council.
The list is funded by boardwalk redeveloper Madison Marquette through a developer’s agreement with the city that dates back to 2010, Madison’s Director of Retail Carrie Turner said.
“Every year Madison spends $100,000 on capital improvements on the waterfront,” Turner said. “We meet annually with members of the beach front committee. We agree upon items that Madison will spend money on in the waterfront.”
This complete 2015 list of improvements includes:
• Maintenance and Operations of Public Restrooms located on the boardwalk at 1st and 4th Avenue Green Spaces for the period of 2010-2014 not to exceed $120,000.00.
• Purchase of a Four Wheel Drive Pick-Up Truck not to exceed $26,000.00.
• Purchase of two (2) seven cubic yard compactor containers to facilitate automated litter removal from the public beaches at actual cost of $15,879.00.
• Waterfront beautification and way finding signage not to exceed $10,000.00.
• Wireless Public Internet Service (Wi-Fi) to Beach not to exceed $30,000.00.
“The thing I like about this list is that it is a good balance of items,” said Garrett Giberson, Sr., beachfront coordinator. “It includes service items, maintenance equipment, a beatification item, the wifi component to the beachfront, and the lifeguard pavilion.”
The lifeguard station, to be located opposite the Fourth Avenue Pavilion on the south end, will be funded in part through unexpended funds from prior years totaling $85,147, with funds not to exceed $40,000 used for design.
The structure will house the lifeguard first aid room, administrative functions, beach pass sales and other beach bathing functions, Giberson said.
