The Asbury Park School District is accepting candidacy petitions for the three vacant seats in the April 19 Board of Education [BOE] election, district spokesperson Chanta L. Jackson announced Tuesday.

Three-year terms are up for Board President Nicolle Harris, and members Corey Lowell and Connie Breech.

Potential candidates must file nominating petitions with the school board by 4 p.m. Feb. 29.

The BOE election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 19.

Prospective candidates can obtain a “School Board Candidate Kit” online at www.njsba.org.

Published by the New Jersey School Boards Association [NJSBA], the kit includes a nominating petition, and information about legal qualifications for candidacy and the role of a school board member.

Information about the New Jersey School Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process are also included in the kit.

“One of the most meaningful contributions that a citizen can make to their community is serving on their local board of education,” said NJSBA President Donald Webster, Jr. “I encourage all interested citizens to consider school board membership. It doesn’t require a degree in education, or a background in politics. However, it does require a sincere interest in the community, its children, and their education.”

A full term on the school board runs for three years.
