The Asbury Park chapter of the Statewide Education Organizing Committee [SEOC] will host a candidates’ forum for the upcoming Board of Education election Monday, according to a news release from the organization.
The forum takes place Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. at Atonement Lutheran Church.
All candidates for the November 5 school board election have been invited to the event. Candidates will be given the opportunity to present information about their campaign platforms and answer questions from the committee and members of the audience, the release said.
There are three three-year terms and two one-year terms up for contest on the Nov. 5 ballot, making a majority of the seats on the nine member board available. A total of eight candidates are in the running for the five spots. Full-term candidates are Connie Sue Breech, Arva M. Council, incumbent Nicolle D. Harris, Corey Lowell [shown above], and incumbent Qzeena Taylor. One-year unexpired term candidates are write-in hopefuls Calvin Anderson and Carol Jones, and incumbents Kenneth Saunders, Jr. and Felicia Simmons.
The SEOC [formerly the Parent Listening Project] is a group of concerned parents, grandparents, community members and neighbors who work together to bring about a better education environment for the children in their respective districts, the release said.
The statewide committee’s mission is to inform and organize school parents in low income districts so they are heard in effective ways; fight for educational improvements, policies, improved health and safety conditions, and funding which benefits all children equally at the school, school district, and state level; and to build strong district wide organizations for common action on local and statewide education policies, according to the release.
The Asbury Park chapter has successfully accomplished efforts to increase bus transportation, reduce the use of suspension in the district, improve the parental notification system and increase parental participation in the school system, the release said.
Atonement Lutheran Church is located at 308 First Avenue.
