A board of education meeting last night was cancelled when less than half of the board members showed up at the designated start time.
The meeting was schedule to start at 7 p.m. Board president Angela Ahbez-Anderson [pictured], board vice president Geneva Smallwood and board member Qzeena Taylor were present.
Ahbez-Anderson acknowledged the lack of quorum, and said the board would wait until 8 p.m. to begin the meeting in case more members showed up. Board member John Raines Jr. entered and took his seat at the dais shortly after.
The board participated in a brief presentation from Lou Parisi of the Asbury Park Veterans of Foreign Wars [VFW] Post. Parisi honored several faculty members for their contributions to the district.
Then, just before 7:30 p.m., Ahbez-Anderson announced that the other three board members had left and that the meeting would be cancelled.
The five board members who did not attend are Gregory Brewington, Christian Hall, Nicole Harris, Gregory Hopson Sr. and Barbara Lesinski.
All of the required district employees and professionals were present at the meeting, including board attorney Michael Gross, state monitor Lester Richens, business administrator Geoffrey Hastings, director of special services William Shannon and director of curriculum and instruction Elford Rawls-Dill.
A significant number of people sat in the audience, as well, many of whom were teachers who have spoken at board meetings in the past.
