Boston Way Sign Affordable Housing In AP Is Underway
Boston Way Opens, Rennaisance Village & Parkview AP To Come As Planning Board Approves Inclusive Affordable Housing Development
The opening of the Asbury Park Housing Authority’s Boston Way Village on the west side is a sign of affordable housing initiatives in Asbury Park, City officials said in a written statement.

“We can’t thank the Asbury Park Housing Authority enough for bringing Boston Way Village to fruition,” Mayor John Moor said. “We congratulate the Board, under the direction of Chair Gregory Hopson Sr, and Executive Director Thomas Sahlin for working so diligently to bring this project to Asbury Park.”
The original Boston Way, which opened in 1952, was vacated in 2014 and demolished in 2017. While the rebuild is the first of its kind in years, two other affordable housing projects are in line for completion within the next year.
“Providing affordable housing in Asbury Park has been a top priority for [the City] Council,” Councilwoman Yvonne Clayton said. “We are pleased that the opening of Boston Way Village is the first step in the long-awaited revitalization of the Springwood Avenue Corridor. These units elevate the quality of affordable housing in the area and will provide homes that residents can feel proud of raising their families. And, with the addition of more affordable rental and for-sale units upon completion of Renaissance Village and groundbreaking for the Parkview AP project, we are on our way to addressing affordable housing needs in Asbury Park. The next step will be to add commercial and provide services in the area to increase the quality of life for the many new residents we are expecting.”
Renaissance Village [shown above] is a 64-unit Michaels Organization project that is being developed in phases on the vacant lots between Memorial Drive and Atkins Avenue. The project consists of constructing 32 townhomes and a four-story, 32-unit multi-family building with retail space and a multipurpose community and computer room, management offices and a health suite.
Parkview AP [shown below] is an Interfaith Neighbors’ 20-unit project located along Springwood Avenue and bordered by Atkins and Sylvan avenues and Adams Street. The owner-occupied income property will feature 10 one-bedroom garage apartments and 10 three-bedroom duplex units along Springwood Avenue. A 20 percent minimum will be deemed for affordable housing, although officials have said they are leaning toward 40 percent affordable units.
The opening also came on the heels of the City Planning Board approving an affordable housing amendment to the Asbury Park Master Plan, which will require future projects across the city include an affordable housing component. Their recommendations and a final vote will come before the City Council prior to a final vote for implementation.
“The recent passing of the Affordable Housing Plan by the Asbury Park Planning Board will further our quest for affordable housing for residents,” Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn said. “The plan provides a path for developers to include affordable units as part of their project plans, helping keep Asbury Park on track for affordable housing in the future, and helping ensure the City’s continued diversity.”
According to a Jan 31 Zillow.com report, the median home value in Asbury Park is $361,700. Asbury Park home values have gone up 20.6 percent over the past year and predictions show they will rise 9.7 percent within the next year. The median list price per square foot in Asbury Park is $401; higher than the New York-Newark-Jersey City Metro average of $281.
