Boys & Girls Club to host NBA free agents at B-ball clinic
Camp will emphasize leadership, community outreach and education
National Basketball Association [NBA] free agent J.R. Inman is set to conduct a youth basketball clinic at the Asbury Park unit of the Boys & Clubs of Monmouth County on Friday, Aug. 15 from noon to 3 p.m., according to recent news release.
Inman is a former Rutgers forward who is now a free agent and D League player with the National Basketball Association [NBA]. He will be assisted by fellow free agent and D League all-star and University of Pittsburgh graduate Tyrell Biggs.
Over 100 kids enrolled in the club’s summer camp are slated to attend the clinic, run by Inman’s company, Rocktown Monarchs, Inc. The Monarch system not only teaches basic basketball skills to boys and girls, but instills the importance of leadership, community outreach and education in them, the release stated.
The Boys & Girls Club clinic will be tailored for children who do not play basketball and Inman will speak to the children about setting realistic life goals and having a backup plan.
“We will perform drills and lectures for the participants using basketball as a tool to encourage the kids to utilize their gifts as windows of opportunity,” said Inman in the release.
Inman is the self published author of the book “When the Air Comes Out of the Ball,” an inspirational autobiography that serves to educate readers about both the glamour and the rigor of professional sports.
“We are so incredibly grateful to our many community partners — without their support we simply couldn’t do the work we do. This is going to be such a meaningful experience for our kids,” said Doug Eagles, executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County.
A post-clinic game station will be set up for children to play Microsoft’s NBA 2k14 and volunteers from Nike will provide equipment and prizes to participants.
Volunteers from the Hope Worldwide organization, Microsoft and Nike will assist at the clinic.
