Budweiser Clydesdales Return to Jersey Shore – AP first stop
Parade from 3 to 5 p.m. Thurs along Ocean, Cookman & Main Street
The Anheuser-Busch Budweiser Clydesdales will kick off a Jersey Shore Summer Tour in Asbury Park on Thursday, according to a press release from the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce.
Used as a symbol of quality and tradition since 1933, the eight-horse hitch and iconic red wagon will traverse from 3 to 5 p.m. along Main Street, Cookman and Ocean avenues. A map and list of stops can be found at AsburyParade.com.
The promotional tour also includes stops in Belmar, Monmouth Park and Seaside Heights through Sunday.
The Clydesdales’ appearance at The Jersey Shore is one of hundreds made annually, according to the press release. Canadians, of Scottish descent, brought the first Clydesdales to America in the mid-1800’s. Today, the giant draft horses are used primarily for breeding and show.
Horses chosen for the Budweiser Clydesdale hitch must be at least three years of age, stand approximately 18 hands – or six feet – at the shoulder, weigh an average of 2,000 pounds, must be bay in color, have four white legs, and a blaze of white on the face and black mane and tail, the release said. A gentle temperament is very important as hitch horses meet millions of people each year.
Each hitch travels with a Dalmatian, used in the early days of brewing to protect the horses and guard the wagon when the driver went inside to make deliveries.
