Cabaret For Life Scholarships
Open To Monmouth & Ocean Students; Application Deadline June 8
Monmouth and Ocean County graduating high school seniors looking to pursue musical theater, theater, or a visual arts degree are eligible for the John C. Rodriguez Scholarship, managed and promoted by Cabaret for Life [CFL] and the Carolan-Rodriguez family.
“Cabaret for Life is pleased to continue offering the John C. Rodriguez Scholarship as we have for the past 12 years to honor one of our most dedicated and talented board members,” CFL President Andrew DePrisco said in a written statement. His warmth, gentle humor, prolific artistic talent and tireless goodness touched everyone he met. John had a tremendous passion to pass along his love for the arts to the next generations.
Rodriguez [at right] was an artist and songwriter, served as not only a set designer and builder but also as a musician, graphic artist and vocalist for the 23-year-old nonprofit that uses its production benefits to support families and individuals battling HIV/AIDS and similar debilitating illnesses. Last year, CFL donated more than $40,000 to eight charities.
Bonnie Carolan, Rodriguez’ wife is a CFL trustee and all three of his children – Annie, Jessie and Maggie have performed in CFL productions.
The scholarship program was created in 2004 as a lasting tribute to the entertainment group’s former director. Each year, $5000 in prize money is available to the applicants.
“Over the years we’ve had the privilege of awarding New Jersey seniors who have gone on to enjoy professional careers in the theater on Broadway and in national tours,’ DePrisco said. Applications are also open to students at Rodriguez’ alma mater – Teaneck High School.
Application requirements include:
Submitting the Rodriguez Scholarship Form
A one-page 250-300 word essay on how the scholarship will help the applicant achieve his/her goals
Two letters of recommendation from a teacher, director, or administrator
High school transcript
Applicant must be pursuing a degree in acting, musical theater, voice, dance, or the fine arts
