Christie launches fundraising at Asbury’s Convention Hall
Nearby protests planned
Gov. Chris Christie sets out Tuesday on an uphill battle to claim the Republican nomination for the 2016 presidential race.
He’ll begin by kicking off fundraising with a return to Asbury Park’s historic Convention Hall. Christie celebrated his second term win at Convention Hall and hosted President Barack Obama’s May 2013 visit there after Superstorm Sandy.
Event tickets started at $250 but a $2,700 per person or $5,400 per couple ticket ensures a photo with the candidate.
Groups like the New Jersey Education Association, the New Jersey Working Families, and New Jersey Citizen Action are planning nearby protests.
Christie was among 14 GOP candidates who participated in Monday night’s Voters First Republican Presidential Forum Monday at the Dana Center at St. Anselm College in Manchester.
He is vying against the 16 other candidates for one of the top 10 spots in Thursday’s debate as determined by sponsor Fox Media’s rules, which picks the candidates via their opinion poll averages.
But the ‘Tell it Like it Is’ campaign launch comes on the heels of jeers from an over 50,000 during his Sunday Haskell triple crown winner presentation.
In a recent Monmouth University poll he landed in a three-way tie for the 7th place spot but a recent Bloomberg poll places in in 8th place just ahead of Ted Cruz and John Kasich.
The final 10 is expected to be announced Tuesday.
