City Council Honors Football Team and BOE
Proclamations given for Central Jersey Group 1 Title and School Boards Recognition Month
The Asbury Park City Council recognized the 2016 Asbury Park High School Varsity Football team for its Central Jersey Group 1 Championship title at the start of the Regular Session Wednesday meeting.
In reading the proclamation, Councilwoman Eileen Chapman said as the team faced a season filled with many peaks and valley, they met every challenge with valor and determination, culminating in an overall record of 18-4.
Aside from the Blue Bishops’ collective and personal triumphs, six of its players earned first team all division spots and three played in the multi-state Senior Bowl in Myrtle Beach N.C.
The recognition included proclamations for the team’s cheerleaders and coaches.
The Asbury Park Board of Education also was recognized by the governing body.
The recognition falls in line with the state’s School Board’s Association declaration that January serves as School Board Recognition Month, Councilwoman Yvonne Clayton said as she read from the municipal proclamation.
“New Jersey public schools serve approximately 1.4 million children,” Clayton said. “The direction of public education is charted locally by individual school boards whose 5,000 members serve as advocates for public education.”
The Asbury Park volunteer Board of Education members include President Angela Ahbez-Anderson, Vice President Kenneth E. Saunders Jr, Connie Breech, Sheila Etienne, Carol Jones, Dominic Latorraca, Barbara Lesinski, Felicia Simmons, and Stephen Williams.
“We are justly justly proud of the academic, athletic and social achievements of the students in our community,” Clayton said.
