City man arrested on weapons charges
20-year-old allegedly had assault rifle in his possession
A city resident involved in a domestic dispute Sunday was brought up on weapons charges after he was found to have an assault rifle in his possession, according to a criminal complaint signed by the Asbury Park Police Department.
Police responded to a domestic disturbance call in the 1300 block of Springwood Avenue Sunday, where 20-year old Altyreek Leonard had reportedly kicked in the door to his mother’s home, according to the complaint signed by Officer Melinda Casey.
A member of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, who is working with the U.S. Marshal’s office, was later called in to arrest Leonard, at which time Leonard allegedly was found to be in possession of an assault rifle, according to Charles Webster, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office.
Leonard faces charges of criminal mischief, unlawful possession of a weapon, and certain persons not to have weapons, Webster said.
The certain persons not to have weapons charge stems from a previous conviction, according to Webster. Leonard was convicted in 2012 on an unlawful weapons charge for possession of a handgun, according to the state Department of Corrections website.
The incident is part of an active and ongoing investigation, Webster said.
