City man tries to conceal stolen eyeglasses in potato chip bag
Man fled the store when confronted by an employee
An Asbury Park man was arrested Wednesday for shoplifting after a witness saw him place eyeglasses in a potato chip bag, according to a news release from Ocean Township police.
Imhotep Muhammad, 50, was allegedly spotted by an employee of the Eye Diagnostic and Surgery Center placing several pairs of eyeglasses in the chip bag in an attempt to steal them, the release said.
The employee confronted Muhammad, who fled the store and was later picked up by Ocean police in a nearby location, the release stated.
He was arrested, charged with shoplifting $1100 worth of eyeglasses and released on a complaint summons to await a future court hearing.
The call came in at approximately 3:40 p.m., the release stated.
The center is located at 3333 Fairmont Avenue in the Wanamassa section of the township.
