A Monmouth County grand jury has indicted an Asbury Park man on charges of attempted murder, accusing him of shooting another Asbury Park resident in a July 10 incident.
The indictment, handed up Tuesday, accuses 24-year-old James Scott, of 200 Deal Lake Drive, of first-degree attempted murder, second-degree charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain persons not to have weapons, and a third-degree charge of possession of a controlled dangerous substance [cocaine].
Police arrested Scott on July 11 following the investigation of July 10 incident in which a 33-year-old city resident suffered a single gunshot would to the hip in the 200 block of Elizabeth Avenue. The victim, whose name has not been released, was transported to Jersey City Medical Center in Neptune and was listed in good condition shortly after the incident occurred, according to previous reports.
Although police believed Scott to be a known member of a street gang, it was not believed that the shooting incident itself was gang related, according to previous reports.
Scott, who has three known aliases— “Eron Dotts,” “Jones” and “Tyrone Scott” — was previously convicted in November 2010, according to the New Jersey Department of Corrections [DOC] website.
On Nov. 19, 2010, Scott was convicted and sentenced to: five years in prison for one count of aggravated assault on Jan. 11, 2010, five years for one count of possession of a controlled dangerous substance on Nov. 18, 2009, three years for one count of knowingly receiving stolen property on March 28, 2009, and three years for one count of possession of heroin on Feb. 29, 2008, according to the DOC website.
Scott served time from Nov. 19, 2010, to Dec. 17, 2012, according to the DOC website.
He was admitted to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution on July 11, 2013 on $600,000 bail with no option to post 10 percent and remains there under the same terms, current jail records show.
