Clinton give history-making victory speech in Brooklyn
Nation's first female to lead presidential ticket for a major party
Unofficial numbers by Monmouth County Clerk Christine Hanlon has former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton capturing 8,588 delegate votes over Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders in the NJ Primary race.
The numbers are based on 448 of the 458 district tallies.
Clinton garnered 22,761 in District 6 and 7,580 in District 7, Hanlon said. Sanders received 15,299 votes in District 6 and 6,454 votes in District 7, with only 10 out of the 458 districts left unreported.
Most news outlets, including the Associated Press and Star Ledger claimed an early victory for Clinton, who needed 2,383 delegate votes heading into Tuesday’s Primary to clinch the Democratic nomination.
Clinton is the first female to win a major political party’s nomination for president.
“I am so grateful to you,” Clinton said Tuesday night addressing a Brooklyn audience just hours after campaigning in California. “It is hard to see tonight but we are all standing under a class ceiling tonight – don’t worry we are not smashing this one. This is the first time in our nation’s history that a woman will lead a [presidential ticket for a major party]. It belongs to generations of women and men who have sacrificed to make this moment possible.”
She also sent a special message of gratitude to the New Jersey voters and thanked Sanders for the ‘exceptional campaign he ran.’
Clinton’s New Jersey win came one day after the Associated Press announced that additional super-delegate votes had given Clinton the numbers needed to become the presumptive nominee.
In Asbury Park, unofficial Monmouth County totals Tuesday night showed resounding support for Clinton throughout its nine districts, despite the three ‘Feel the Bern’ rallies held in the city.
“This campaign is about making sure there are no ceilings on any of us,” Clinton said. “The end of the primaries is only the beginning of the work we are called to do.”
