Coastal Habitat For Humanity Works In Asbury Park
Non Profit Holds Community Immersion Day And New Home Dedication
The Coastal Habitat For Humanity completed two community support initiatives in Asbury Park this past month.
Joined by students from Seton Hall University and Jersey Shore University Medical Center, the nonprofit’s Community Immersion Day helped a long time west side resident with home repairs.
“We worked in Asbury Park with a homeowner who needed assistance with interior and exterior repairs as part of our Love Your Neighbor program,” spokeswoman Caelin McCallum said. “We were able to get local residents as well as medical students from Hackensack Meridian Health’s new medical school program with Overall. It was a great experience and a few of the medical students stated that they would come back.”
Founded in 1994, Coastal Habitat For Humanity’s mission is to bring people of all backgrounds together to build and repair homes and communities.
A few days later, members of the local nonprofit joined area dignitaries in welcoming Asbury Park’s newest homeowner Shiffon Gross. A single mother with four children, ages 3 months to 20, Gross received keys to a 2 story, 3 bedroom home on DeWitt Avenue.
“She has been trying to find more permanent and affordable housing for several years and has been living in rental housing,” McCallum said. “She mentioned that rental housing was difficult due to the inadequate state it was in because of her children’s allergies. She is very excited to be moving to Asbury Park and becoming an active member of the community.”
“We are proud to support this organization and are happy to see the difference they make everyday in our community,” Assembly Member Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey said in joint written statement.
Headquartered on Memorial Drive, Coastal Habitat For Humanity administers a number of support programs, including Aging in Place, Neighborhood Revitalization, Single Family Home Construction, and Homeowner Education.
