County officials to give public workshop in Asbury
Will explain voting rules and regulations
The Monmouth County Board of Elections will give a free public workshop on voting rules and regulations at the Asbury Park Veterans of Foreign Wars [VFW] Post 1333, 701 Lake Avenue, on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m., according to a county news release.
County Clerk Claire M. French will describe proper voting procedures, including rules for authorizing messengers to collect vote-by-mail applications commission of registration.
“It’s an educational opportunity to share information to avoid, as much as possible, misunderstanding when it comes to the process,” she told the Sun.
The Monmouth County Board of Elections disallowed 332 vote-by-mail ballots and 32 provisional election ballots in the 2013 Asbury Park municipal election which, if counted, could have changed the results of the election. Judge Dennis O’Brien ruled in July 2013 to uphold the county Board of Elections disqualification of the ballots.
French [shown at right] will be joined by Board of Election Commissioners Mary DeSarno and Christine Hanlon, the release stated.
An official voting machine will be at the VFW to demonstrate how to vote on the machine. Vote-by-mail applications will be distributed and explained.
“It is important to get out into the community and explain the election voting process,” said French in the release. “I look forward to meeting with potential voters and answering any questions they may have.”
To date, French’s office has processed over 11,000 vote-by-mail ballots countywide and messengers have just started showing up to the county office with ballots, she said.
The workshop was arranged by the Asbury Park chapter of the National Action Network, according to City Clerk Steven Kay
