Cowerks will host ‘Angry Birds Hour of Code’ Sunday
Free event designed to demystify code and show anyone can learn the basics
Following a successful Frozen: Hour of Code in December, Cowerks, Asbury Park’s technology hub and shared work space, will host a similar workshop for kids on Sunday, Jan. 25 between 1 and 3 p.m., this time based on the popular game Angry Birds, according to an organization news release.
The Hour of Code is a free one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics.
Last month’s Hour of Code, a collaboration between Cowerks and Lakehouse Music Academy, saw over 30 children between the ages of 3 and 15 complete Disney’s Frozen-themed coding challenge with the help of volunteer mentors from the Cowerks community.
Hour of Code is organized by Code.org, a public 501c3 non-profit dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color. Anybody can host an Hour of Code anytime, but the nonprofit grassroots campaign’s goal is for tens of millions of students to try an Hour of Code during their annual celebration of Computer Science Education Week, held the second week of December.
Learning computer science helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity, the release stated. Early starts help students build a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.
Cowerks is located on the third floor of Asbury Park’s Lakehouse building, which is also home to the Lakehouse Music Academy, Russo Music, and several other creative businesses.
