Deal Lifeguards Rescue 12 From Rip Current
PD credits swift actions of five on duty lifeguard
Deal Police reports 12 swimmers were successfully rescued from a dangerous rip current within a half hour by lifeguards stationed at the Stanley Conover Pavilion and the neighboring Deal Casino, spokesman Sgt. Brian Egan said.
The rescue occurred between 2:30 and 3 p.m. an involved five lifeguards, Egan said.
The swimmers ranged in ages young and old and included three children, he said. An unidentified person was taken to the hospital for further evaluation and remains in stable condition.
“This was a fast moving current that quickly overwhelmed swimmers both young and old,” Egan said. “It is important that people know if they are going to go into the ocean they please do it near a lifeguard. Had this happened on an unprotected beach the outcome could have been a lot worse.”
The Deal Police Department also issued the attached guide to help educate swimmers on what to do if they are caught in a rip current.
