Destination AP & GS Equality Walk support LGBT community
Events help bring awareness to anti-bullying, health and senior issues
This weekend two events will show support for the LGBT community.
Destination Asbury Park returns as the city welcomes the Garden State Equality 6th Annual Walk.
“What’s amazing about this moment is that transgender visibility has never been greater,” said Garden State Equality Executive Director Andrea Bowen. “We had Janet Mock and Laverne Cox making waves the last few years, and most recently, Caitlyn Jenner. With Caitlyn’s coming out, we had a Diane Sawyer special that was respectful and informative. But we still have a long journey ahead of us in New Jersey.”
The Montclair-based nonprofit works to educate and advocate for safe environments for youth, improvement of health services that meet LGBT community needs, and respectful treatment of seniors, Bowen said.
The walk was brought to Asbury Park as a way to ensure a more central location for attendees, she said.
The event runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the walk kicking off at 10 a.m. from Kennedy Park on Grand Avenue between Cookman and Lake avenues.
At 7 p.m. tonight Destination Asbury Park kicks off with Watermark owner Russell Lewis joining DJ James Vance in setting the tone for weekend at the Beach Bar for $10 a person.
