Dog park group to hold interest meeting on Sunday
Council has approved one-year pilot project for dogs in Library Square park
The committee responsible for bringing a dog park to Library Square Park is holding a meeting to inform the public and take questions about the project.
The meeting will be held on Sunday, June 24, at 11 a.m. at Pure restaurant, 711 Cookman Ave. It is open to the public.
The dog park will include two separated side for the dogs — one for larger animals and one for smaller. It will occupy the easternmost portion of Library Square Park, which is located between Grand Avenue and Heck Street. one block west of Cookman Avenue.
The planning process for the park began in the summer of 2011 when a group of Asbury Park citizens, business owners and condominium owners in the central business district expressed an interest in such a project, according to a press release from the committee.
The committee consists of Don Stine of the Asbury Park Historical Society; business owner Debbie DeLisa; resident condo owner Rachel Hirschfeld; Shade Tree Commission member Tom Pivinski; city council representative Councilwoman Sue Henderson; city manger Terence Reidy; and city engineer Joe Cunha.
The purpose of placing the dog run in Library Square Park is not only “the socialization of the dogs and their owners,” Hirschfeld is quoted as saying in the release, but also “to return Library Park to its original grandeur where families congregated in the park and it was a hub for central Asbury.”
The committee will hold fundraising events at the park and use the moneys to “help those throughout the community who cannot afford food and veterinary care for their pets,” according to the release.
The city council at its most recent meeting approved the dog park on a trial basis through resolution. Click herefor a previous story on the approval.
