Dollar Tree Opens On Main
Store manager: 80 to 90 percent of the employees are from Asbury Park
The Dollar Tree opened its doors at 3 p.m. Thursday on Main Street at the northwest corner of Main Street and Third Avenue.
“Our customers discover new treasures every week ranging from seasonal decor, household products, party and craft supplies, dinnerware, food, teaching and school necessities, health and beauty essentials, toys, and books,” said Kayleigh M. Painter, manager of Investor and Media Relations at the Chesapeake, Va headquarters.
Founded in 1953, the Fortune 150 company has over 15,000 stores across the country and in Canada. It acquired Family Dollar discount chain store for $8.5 billion in 2015.
“Dollar Tree continues to grow and we are proud to be part of the Asbury Park community,” Painter said.
All items in the 10,357 square foot store are priced at $1 or less, Painter said. A store of this size typically employs 12 to 20 associates.
Local store manager Adela Cruise said 80 to 90 percent of the employees are from Asbury Park.
She said there’s been a flurry of people inquiring about jobs but that only positions for part time seasonal jobs remain open.
“It’s always for the needs of the businesses,” she said as she and one other cashier attended to the long line of customers on Saturday afternoon “We protect company assets at all times. I run a tight ship, this store means businesses.”
The store is a part of Fasano Properties redevelopment of the Main Street block between Third and Fourth avenues.
Developer Pat Fasano will construct a modern mixed-use building at the corner of Fourth Avenue that will feature four, two-bedroom apartments above 5,000 square foot retail space on the long vacant Getty Gas station site.
The retail space will be fitted for two businesses and the two bedroom apartments will feature inset balconies with a gold privacy screening. The apartment entrances will be in the rear of the building off Fourth Avenue.
The Dollar Tree site features a bicycle rack and bench seating along Third Avenue, and a parking lot to its north on Main Street.
Fasano has said a 9’x 65’ mural wall along the Third Avenue façade will be created via consultation from local artist Porkchop and the city’s mural committee.
Dollar Tree is located at 1105 Main St. The store is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. For more information or to apply for a job online, visit DollarTree.com.
