DPW hosts city-wide clean up
Old clothes, empty paint cans, rimless tires will be accepted
Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., city residents can drop off items at the recycling center that aren’t the norm for daily collections.
The Asbury Park Department of Public Works is hosting a “City-wide Clean Up Day.” Rimless tires, empty paint cans, clothing and book will be collected along with the regular items collected on a day-to-day basis like televisions, computers, printers and other electronic items, along with single stream recycling items. Paper shredding services will also be available. No household garbage or building materials will be collected.
Proof of residency is required to participate, according to Yvonne Adams, the city’s recycling coordinator.
“They have to bring something showing they are an Asbury Park resident,” said Adams.
Members of the community who do not have identification can bring a utility bill, sewer bill or tax bill that shows an address within the city.
Cars must enter through the 9 Main St. entrance [shown above] and exit out through the gates at 818 Lake Ave. to help the logistics of the event move swiftly and to prevent accidents from cars both entering and exiting on Main Street, she said.
All of the items collected will be counted towards the city’s recycling tonnage report. The annual report show the totals of weight, in tons, that the recycling department collects. The totals are reported to the state and are used as a measure for the state’s yearly allocation of recycling funds, Adams said.
It is the first city-wide recycling day that Adams has organized. She got the idea from attending monthly county recycling coordinator meetings, she said.
She will be on-site to distribute tote bags, small note pads and other giveaways, and to disseminate information about the city’s single-stream recycling program, which some people get confused about she said.
“Hopefully, if it goes well, we’ll do it every year,” she said
