Esperanza to be covered with decorative scrim
'The concept is to dress up the Esperanza a little bit while we work on existing plans'
The longstanding skeleton of the Esperanza building will be partially covered with a decorative scrim this summer.
Waterfront redeveloper Asbury Partners is planning to bring bath houses and lockers to the waterfront area through the proposed Summer Experience, and placing a scrim on the Esperanza is part of that plan, said Brian Cheripka at the May 15 council meeting. Cheripka is vice president of land for iStar Financial, the majority owner of Asbury Partners.
The Esperanza [pictured above] was planned as a luxury condominium complex that never came to fruition. Asbury Partners will eventually develop that lot, Cheripka said, but “in the meantime, we’re trying to do something with it for the Summer Experience.”
The scrim would decorate the upper columns on the corners of the building, Cheripka said.
“For each of the four corners, we would create a decorative, artistic scrim,” Cheripka said. “The imagery will be from Asbury Park and from the waterfront. The concept is to dress up the Esperanza a little bit while we work on existing plans.”
The scrims will be 10 to 12 feet high, Cheripka said.
