Free street trees offered to Asbury Park residents
Over 100 trees available for planting
The New Jersey Tree Foundation, in partnership with American Forests and the City of Asbury Park, is getting ready to plant another round of shade trees in the city this fall, according to a news release from the foundation.
Anyone who would like a 12-14 foot tree planted in the space between the curb and the sidewalk in front of their property should send their name and email address to Lisa Simms, NJ Tree Foundation director, at njtf1@juno.com, or call 505-609-8032 and leave a voice message that includes the information.
Properties with overhead utility wires on their side of the block are asked to include that information in the email or voice message.
Renters must ask their landlords if a tree may be planted in front of their home.
There are over 100 trees available for planting, the release stated.
The trees come through a partnership with American Forests’ Community ReLeaf program, which has already seen several trees take root in the city along DeWitt Avenue and most recently along Wesley Lake.
As part of this program, American Forests identifies cities that could benefit from an analysis of their urban forests — or aspects of their urban forests — based on research and conversations with urban forest managers. Then, each year, a handful of cities are selected as “project sites” for that year’s Community ReLeaf activities. Asbury Park was selected in 2013 along with Pasadena, Calif., Atlanta, Ga., Detroit and Nashville.
Since 1999, the foundation has planted 200,114 trees across the state with volunteers, the release stated.
